We have an opening for a part time School Based Health Float Nurse Practitioner. Under the supervision of the Director of School Based Health, the SBH Nurse Practitioner is responsible for; provision of clinical services, collaboration, health education, community health planning, and professional practice within the participating school districts of Salem and Peabody. The SBH Nurse Practitioner may participate in NSCH community outreach efforts as appropriate and as assigned. This position is a part-time position for 20 hours/week during the school year and may require travel to multiple SBHC sites. As a team member at our health center, you will work with staff who are racially, ethnically and culturally diverse, so being culturally competent is required. A sense of humor is also very important!


  1. Provides primary care to students

  2. Assessment and management of health care of students

  3. Responds to frequently encountered health issues, provides counseling and crisis intervention when required, e.g., adolescent pregnancy, substance abuse, death of a family member, suicide, responds to child neglect or abuse issues (as required by Massachusetts statute).

  4. Consultation with school staff on health issues and provisions of clinical in-service education as needed.

  5. Consults with the SBHC physician/medical director, Director of School Based Health, and school administrators to develop and implement policies and procedures for the clinical services and programs addressing health issues, e.g. immunization, medication administration, school-wide injury prevention programs, and other special programs such as groups addressing eating disorders, smoking cessation, and violence prevention.

  6. Participates in the development of an interdisciplinary plan for the SBHC to ensure that the students in need of services are identified in a timely manner and appropriate intervention is initiated.

  7. Assists with written reports for North Shore Community Health, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and other agencies describing the services provided by the program, numbers of student served, etc.

  8. Ensures that there is an emergency care plan in place which is communicated to all staff and is closely coordinated with community emergency care procedure.

  9. Maintain appropriate and timely medical records on patients under care. Although the NSCHI policy in 2013 is 72 hours, the expectation is for clinically relevant records to be signed and closed within 24 hours.

  10. Consults with the collaborative physician on those patients who require care beyond the scope of the nurse practitioner and follows those patients in collaboration with the physician.

  • MSN, Certification as a Nurse Practitioner, experience in school-based health center setting or ambulatory care.
  • Active Massachusetts Licensure
  • 2+ years NP experience
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with commitment to establishing a safe and respectful environment for team members
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment
  • High level of commitment to continuous improvement in the quest for comprehensive and quality health care.
  • Bilingual Spanish/Portuguese preferred
